Given the accumulation and concentration of scientific knowledge in today's universities, it is expected that they will make a significant contribution to the knowledge-based development and economy as well as the creation and strengthening of the knowledge community. In addition, based on the different and diverse characteristics of university generations, the contribution of entrepreneurial universities in the knowledge-based development and their alignment with the knowledge-based economy is more than other types of university generations. Entrepreneurial university as the third generation of the university is one of the scenarios of the future university for the participation of the higher education in the national development process. Entrepreneurship of universities is one of the key strategies for raising of social responsibility and holding higher education accountable and achieving the goals of social change and sustainable development. In the study, by evaluating five Iranian universities using a case study method based on the model agreed upon by the EC and the OECD, It can be concluded that Iranian universities have a very long and difficult path to transform and become an entrepreneurial university, and have a relatively small role in the development of knowledge-based and knowledge-based economy. Strengthening the functions of education and research, development of innovation and open science, digital transformation, expansion of international scientific mobility, diversification of financial resources, flexibility in methods and recruitment and use of human resources, development of soft and hard infrastructure to support entrepreneurs, are key criteria for entrepreneurial university Consequently, promoting the share and role of Iranian universities in the development and knowledge-based economy.
