A review of the global competitiveness index shows that, unfortunately, Iran's economy is not in a good position from this perspective and no appropriate policy has been adopted to improve it. The formation of national knowledge ecosystems and knowledge-based ecosystems seems to play an important role in this regard. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyze the impact of the national knowledge ecosystem on the competitiveness of countries and to provide a policy solution to improve the competitiveness of the Iranian economy. In this regard, following the knowledge-based development ecosystem approach, the national knowledge ecosystem is presented as a conceptual framework and an analytical model is presented. Then, the analytical model is estimated using panel data (country-year) and the structural equation modeling technique. Therefore, the present study is a quantitative applied study carried out with a descriptive approach. Research findings show that knowledge production, acquisition, dissemination and promotion, as four key processes of the national knowledge ecosystem, affect national competitiveness structures by interacting with its capabilities and capacities that are formed in an appropriate ecosystem. Therefore, it is recommended that the Government build “Knowledge and Knowledge Based Ecosystems” at local, regional and national levels. Because that is the only way that knowledge and universities can serve national competitiveness.
